Wise, yet simple....

As I was reading by Bible yesterday, I came across these verses: Romans 16:17-19, "Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions and offences contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them. For they that are such serve not our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly; and by good words and fair speeches deceive the hearts of the simple. For your obedience is come abroad unto all men. I am glad therefore on your behalf: but yet I would have you wise unto that which is good, and simple concerning evil." In the first part of this chapter, Paul is sending greetings to different friends. He pauses in verse 17 and gives them a warning to beware of those that "cause divisions and offences contrary to the doctrine". In verse 18 he describes those people as serving themselves and not God. Notice the last part of that verse where it tells what kind of people are deceived by them. Paul goes on in verse 19 to exhort them to be "wise unto that which is good, and simple concerning evil". In other words he is saying, "I wish you were wise" or "I wish you knew alot about good but yet simple or ignorant about evil."
I have heard it said that many people in certain cults today once called themselves baptists. If this is true, why is this happening? I believe it is because they were simple concerning good and when the other "religion" came knocking on their door they were deceived.
This passage has encouraged me to read my Bible and pray more and I hope it does the same for you.
