"What Is That To Thee"

John 21:18-22 Verily, verily, I say unto thee, When thou wast young, thou girdedst thyself, and walkedst whither thou wouldest: but when thou shalt be old, thou shalt stretch forth thy hands, and another shall gird thee, and carry thee whither thou wouldest not. This spake he, signifying by what death he should glorify God. And when he had spoken this, he saith unto him, Follow me. Then Peter, turning about, seeth the disciple whom Jesus loved following; which also leaned on his breast at supper, and said, Lord, which is he that betrayeth thee? Peter seeing him saith to Jesus, Lord, and what shall this man do?Jesus saith unto him, If I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to thee? follow thou me.

Today, while we were sharing what we read in the Bible, I shared this passage. Momma helped me understand it better because I didn’t know everything it meant. What I thought was interesting was verses 19-22. In verse 19 Jesus says to Peter, “Follow me”. Peter, as soon as Jesus tells him this, turns around and looks at John and says, “…what shall this man do?” Jesus says in verse 22, “…what is that to thee?” ( in other words, “mind your own business” ). Then, He says it again only it’s a little more specific, “follow THOU me.” He didn’t use “thou” in verse 19.
While we were talking about this we were thinking of examples and one example I gave was, if God tells you to say “Amen”, then don’t look at the person beside you and ask God why he’s not saying, “Amen”. Just mind your own business and say, “Amen”. Someone else gave the example, “If God tells you to talk to someone while out soulwinning, don’t look at the rest of your group to see if they are going to do it. You go witness to the person.
We had an interesting conversation about this passage and I really enjoyed it. John is my favorite book of the Bible and in addition to my daily Bible reading, I have been reading it over and over again for several years. What is your favorite book of the Bible?

I prefer Psalms, Proverbs, and Ecclesiastes.

I'm not surprised you had a hard time and had to ask your mom for help on this passage - all the old English words (thou, thee, -st) can get confusing. You pulled a really good point out of all of it though!

Good post Caleb!
My favorite book of the Bible? Let's see, there are so many that I like...I think it would have to be Psalms.
